After so many years, Tanya Chua finally came back to Singapore for her first ever concert.
Most Singapore singers who ventured out of Singapore and gained success will usually return to Singapore with equal popularity. However, this does not seem to apply in Tanya's case. Somehow, she just don't appeal to the Chinese music listeners in Singapore.
Perhaps, people still think she's more ang moh than Chinese but actually over the years, she has become very proficient in Mandarin and now she can even write lyrics for her own songs. Very commendable for someone who started out singing English.
The concert was a simple affair, no fanciful costumes and even stage props was very minimal - the focus was really on Tanya's music and her singing.
Maybe she's really nervous since this is her first time performing in front of such a big audience back here in Singapore, she don't seem to be on top form for the first half of the concert and her pitching was a little off in the first few songs.
She also revealed at the concert that she's preparing for an English album and sang a new song 'Key to Happiness'. I think she might have been doing too much of Chinese songs, this song is really nothing to shout about especially the lyrics. But strangely, her performance picked up after this song and the rest of the concert was awesome.
Highlight of the night was Kit Chan's appearance.
This is the first time I'm seeing Kit Chan singing live and her stage presence and live singing is really fantastic.
Tanya is one singer that I was hoping to see her in a concert.
After this show, my thought is that it'll probably be better if it was a smaller and cosier environment like in a pub or livehouse. The choice of music arrangements and songs for this concert might have been a factor as well - it could have made a difference if there was a rock segment for this concert.
Nevertheless, it's overall a good effort for her first ever concert.
Next up - Faye Wong's concert in end Oct! :D
