Several years after leaving the orphanage to which her father never returned for her, Gabrielle Chanel finds herself working in a provincial bar both. She's both a seamstress for the performers and a singer, earning the nickname Coco from the song she sings nightly with her sister.
A liaison with Baron Balsan gives her an entree into French society and a chance to develop her gift for designing increasingly popular hats. When she falls in love with English businessman Arthur Capel further opportunities open up, though life becomes ever more complicated.
Since this movie talks about Coco Chanel, the actress playing the role is extremely important and Audrey Tautou really brought out the character very well.
I think it's really not easy to play the lead role in a biopic. For instance, in this movie, Audrey Tautou was appearing in at least 90% of the scenes. I can only remember one scene which did not have her in it and it probably lasted less than 3 minutes.
And besides that, you really have to be convincing and attractive enough to keep the audience looking at your face the entire time and not get bored. Audrey Tautou is really one good actress.
This movie shows how Coco Chanel made use of her wits and charm to work her way up and combined with her talent and unique styling opinion, she gained a foothold in the fashion industry and high society in France which made her the icon she is today.
Actually the movie touches mostly on Coco Chanel's love life and watching the movie will make you understand why her love life is an important element in getting her to her eventual status.
A good movie to watch for its great film settings, costumes designs and Audrey Tautou. :)
