A Small Piece of Summer, A Big Piece of Cheer

So here's the review..

For a start, the venue was 'made smaller' than it was supposed to be.
My block is supposed to have 18 rows and i'm sitting at Row 6.
I think there were only 4 rows behind me before it goes on to the next block.

The concert tickets were 'sold out' at the highest and lowest categories
but those price categories in the middle were not selling too well, i think.
But well, i think this arrangement was good.
It'll not be nice to see a concert with empty rows in between.

As usual, to cater to the 'always-late-for-anything-and-everything-Singaporeans', the concert started late, around 8.25pm.

Unlike other concerts, Cheer's concert started with a slow song.
With just her and a guitar, she sang unplugged to two songs.
Her voice was sooooo clear and raw and gentle.
Seeing her so immersed in singing and playing the guitar.
It is a pure enjoyment. Music can be just so simple.

The 3rd song onwards, different musical instruments were slowly introduced on stage and she belted out slow songs for a good 45 minutes. The acoustics and sound system was really very very good.

There was no raising platform or any gadgets of such in this concert at all.
The only rostrum-like platform available was one that the crew will have to move for her.

And then, came the 'Rock' segment.
Cheer disappeared but came on very soon with a party-liked eye-mask masquerade mask. Her band members wore similar masks too.
Those that you'll see people wearing at cocktail parties, you know?
Ya la.. Something like that. Muahaha..

Anyway, i thought she was finally gonna change, but she didn't.
It's still the same white dress with jeans beneath it.
Amazingly, she looks good in it.
I don't think a lot of people can wear like that and actually look good.

And so, she started with her very morbid song - Sentimental Kills.
Then came the song that got most of the crowd on their feet -
躺在你的衣櫃 - this is one of her more popular song i'll say.

And thereafter, some of the audience remained on their feet througout the rest of the show. This is the reason why i say Singaporeans are surprisingly high and spontaneous. Haha!

And after a few more songs, she FINALLY went to change
and came down the stage to 'do her rounds'.
The audience WENT CRAZY! People mobbed her!

I think it was timed such that before she finish singing the song, she'll be back on the stage. But the song finished way before she manage to get back on stage and the band had to play random drum beats to fill up the emptiness. Keke..

And coincidentally, she was singing 女明星 (Female Star).
I think this must be one of the few moments that she really felt like one,
since she is such a low-key indie singer :P

One of the highest moment - 吉他手

The other highlight was - 旅行的意義
where Cheer sang to it wearing a helmet on her head. Some of the hardcore fans also brought helmet and put it on when she was singing this song.
This was a 'must-do' for her "A Piece of Summer" series of concerts.

Why wear helmet? Watch the music video and you'll know why..

And then came the FIVE encores
The final encore, she sang with the houselights on! :D
The whole concert lasted 3 HOURS!

I really don't know how to describe this concert.
My friend's 'water analogy' of her concert was pretty well-described :)

But you'll really have to be in it to know how great it is.
I have another friend, who went in without knowing exactly who she is.
She came out saying she's a Cheer Chen fan.
That's how magical it is. Haha!

Conclusion: A great piece of summer, a truly enjoyable night :)

p/s: Lindy, the ending roller credits..
Got thank your hotel leh, u must report to your whoever that they did thank Hotel R****z***s. Keke..
